Electrical Heating Pit Furnace and Its Specifications

What is a Pit Furnace?
A Pit furnace is a type of furnace used for metallurgical processes which require low temperatures; mostly used to harden alloys like steel and evenly heat them. Pit furnaces are used to treat large metal objects with heat.

Pit furnace Manufacturers design Pit Furnaces to have a detachable movable roof which may or may not expand. They can also be round rectangular or square.

The following are the common industrial applications of Pit Furnaces.

1- Gas carburizing:
Gas Carburizing is a metallurgical process in which metals and alloys are treated with heat to harden the surface. Metals are put into the pit furnaces and are heated to high temperatures (typically 925°C) along with Atomic Carbon. This carbon seeps into the surface of the metal to about 1-3mm and hardens them.

2- Case Hardening:
Case Hardening is a process in which metal surfaces are hardened with materials like carbon. The Surface is called case and the process hardens only the case and not the entire metal object. This process is generally carried out after the metal objects are given their final shape.

3- Bright Annealing:
Bright Annealing is a process of heating or cooling metal objects in an inert atmosphere so that these objects can go through the process of oxidization. During this process the surface becomes bright. If Bright Annealing is improperly done, the objects will have poor features. The surface of these objects may crack, can be stained or can be ruined by being corroded very easily.

4- Normalizing:
This process is very similar to that of annealing, except for the part where, in normalizing, the cooling is done by air. Cooling metal objects quickly result is more ductile metals but cooling slowly using air results in harder and stronger but less ductile metals.

5- Carbonitriding:
Carbonitriding is a process modifying the surface of metals to reduce wear. Nitrogen and carbon are both introduced to metal objects for them to seep in. This process transforms low-grade metals to the expensive industry ready metals.

1- These furnaces can have a maximum temperature of 1000°C.
2- In a working space, the temperature is uniform, give or take 5°.
3- In pit furnaces, the atmospheric circulation system is highly efficient.
4- The Load cooling systems are highly efficient as well.
